After initial testing, all milk undergoes Holder Pasteurization, the gold standard and standard safety process in Donor Human Milk (DHM) banking. This is where the donor breastmilk is gently heated to 62.5 degrees Celsius for 30 minutes. This eliminates bacteria and removes viruses and pathogens while preserving most of the natural enzymes and nutritional value of breastmilk. Every batch of milk is also analyzed with the MIRIS Human Milk Analyzer–the only FDA-approved HMA. This is used to determine the nutritional composition of the donor breastmilk including the fat, protein, and carbohydrates as well as the caloric value and confirm authenticity. After freeze-drying, each batch is bacteriologically re-tested as well as moisture analyzed to ensure consistency, shelf-stability, and quality.
